Renovation Debris Nightmares: What You Cannot Throw in a Bin

Pile of renovation debris and construction waste outside a damaged building, highlighting the importance of proper renovation debris disposal

Your renovation is finally done. The new floors look great, the walls are fresh, and you’re ready to enjoy your updated space. But now you’re staring at a mountain of debris; drywall chunks, old tiles, broken countertops, and who knows what else, and you have no idea what to do with it all.

The truth is, you can’t just toss everything into a regular bin and hope for the best. We’re Kinsley Junk Removal, and we’ve been helping Maple Ridge homeowners clean up after renovations for over 20 years. We’ve seen the fines, the rejected loads at the dump, and the headaches that come from getting it wrong.

This guide breaks down exactly what you can and cannot throw away and why trying to cut corners could cost you big time.

What you're about to learn

The number one mistake we see

People finish a renovation, fill up a bin with everything; old flooring, paint cans, a busted water heater, some weird-looking insulation and call it a day.

Then the bin company rejects the load. Or worse, the dump finds prohibited items, and the homeowner gets slapped with a fine that wipes out any “savings” from trying to do it themselves.

We had a customer last year who tried to save a few hundred dollars by doing his own cleanup. He put some old paint cans and a water heater in with his drywall and lumber. The recycling centre flagged the load, traced it back to him, and he ended up paying over $500 in penalties. He called us afterward and said, “I should have just hired you from the start.”

Don’t be that guy.

What absolutely cannot go in a regular bin

Let's talk about drywall because everyone has it

Drywall is the most common renovation debris. But here’s the thing: in Maple Ridge, drywall (also called gypsum board) has its own rules. It can’t just be thrown in with everything else. The recycling depot at 10092 236th Street accepts drywall separately, often at a lower cost than general waste, but it needs to be segregated.

If you mix drywall with concrete, wood, or metal, you’ll likely pay a higher disposal fee or be turned away entirely. A lot of rental bins don’t even accept drywall unless it’s specified upfront.

This is why we separate everything when we do a cleanup. Different materials go to different places. It saves money and keeps everything legal.

Concrete, bricks, and heavy rubble

Dump

These are heavy. Really heavy. Most standard bins have weight limits, and going over means extra charges. Concrete and bricks can be recycled into new aggregate for road bases and landscaping projects. But they need to be clean, no rebar sticking out, no paint, no trash mixed in.

If you’re taking down a wall or breaking up a driveway, the concrete chunks need their own trip. Golden Ears Recycling in Maple Ridge accepts clean concrete and asphalt, but you’ll need to haul it yourself or hire someone who knows the drill.

What about yard waste and soil?

Soil, sod, branches, and other green waste cannot go in a general waste bin either. The City of Maple Ridge asks residents to compost food scraps and other organic materials in line with Metro Vancouver’s Organics Disposal Ban.

If you’re landscaping or clearing land, you’ll need a separate arrangement for that material. Some companies accept clean fill, but it has to be sorted properly.

How we handle it at Kinsley Junk Removal

Look, you don’t need to become an expert on waste disposal bylaws. That’s our job.

When you call us, we send a team to your property. We sort everything on-site drywall here, metal there, wood over here, hazardous stuff in a separate pile. We know what the Maple Ridge Recycling and Waste Centre accepts and what needs to go elsewhere.

We haul it all away, dispose of it properly, and leave your property clean. No fines. No rejected loads. No stress.

And if something is hazardous like old paint or throwing out a fridge with coolant we know exactly where to take it. We’ve been doing this for over 20 years. We have relationships with the local depots and recycling centres. We don’t guess.

So what happens if you mess this up?

Maple Ridge doesn’t play around when it comes to illegal dumping. They have a specific bylaw just for littering and dumping in open spaces.

Not long ago, some company got caught dumping hazardous waste in a forested area. The city found out fast. They slapped them with fines.

And it’s not just companies. Homeowners get fined too.

Here’s how it goes: you put something bad in a bin. The landfill catches it and rejects the whole load. They can usually trace it back to you. Now you’re paying the disposal fees, plus a penalty, plus maybe even the cleanup bill if stuff got dumped where it shouldn’t be.

Maple Ridge’s Solid Waste and Recycling Regulation Bylaw No. 6800 lists the penalties. Some fines are over $1,000. And if you keep doing it? Every day counts as a new offence. That adds up real fast.

There's a better way

Look, you could rent a bin. You could load it yourself. You could spend hours stressing about what goes where.

Or you could just call us.

We show up when we say we will. We do all the heavy lifting. We sort everything properly. We haul it away and dump it the right way, following all of Maple Ridge’s rules. You don’t lift a finger.

Our customers tell us this is the easiest part of their whole renovation. They get to enjoy their new space without spending days hauling junk to the dump and crossing their fingers they won’t get fined.

Some questions people ask

Only if the paint is completely dry. Like, leave the lid off and let it harden into a solid chunk. Then the empty can can go in your regular garbage. But if there’s still liquid paint sloshing around? That’s hazardous. Take it to a depot.

Depends on the job. Every pile is different. We give free quotes, no pressure, no hidden fees. Just call us, tell us what you’ve got, and we’ll give you a straight price.

We take everything where it belongs. Metal, concrete, certain plastics, those go to recycling centres. Regular garbage goes to the Maple Ridge Recycling and Waste Centre. Hazardous stuff goes to special facilities. We never dump illegally. Ever. We’re proud of that.

Yes. Our construction debris removal service covers drywall, wood, flooring, old cabinets, and other renovation waste. Contractors, builders, and homeowners rely on us to keep job sites clean and safe.

Renovations are stressful enough. You don’t need to become a waste disposal expert on top of everything else.

Let us handle the junk. We’ll show up, load up, and clean up. You get your space back. And you can relax knowing everything was disposed of legally and responsibly.
